Dan Brown calls Manila 'gates of hell' in novel “Inferno”; Upsets MMDA and DOT Departments

Dan Brown's Inferno

Philippines -- While travel magazines have recently been citing the Philippines as a tropical paradise, American author Dan Brown seems to think otherwise based on his much-anticipated new novel.

In "Inferno," the fourth part in Harvard art professor Robert Langdon's adventures, one of the characters goes through "the gates of hell" in Manila.

The description of the city is from the first-hand account of one of the fictional characters, the messianic Dr. Sienna Brooks.

One character from the novel, Sienna Brooks, joined a humanitarian mission to Manila only to be shocked by its poverty and then raped by local ruffians.

An excerpt from the book goes: "When the group settled in among the throngs in the city of Manila—the most densely populated city on earth—Sienna could only gape in horror. She had never seen poverty on this scale."

As written in a fictional novel of Dan Brown in his Book, Dr. Brooks, went to the Philippines for a mission to supposedly feed poor fishermen and farmers on the countryside.

She expected the Philippines to be a "wonderland of geological beauty, with vibrant seabeds and dazzling plains."

Upon setting foot in Manila, however, Brooks could only "gape in horror" as "she had never seen poverty on this scale."

She said her "dark depression" flooded back, with pictures of poverty and crime flashing through her eyes.

"For every one person Sienna fed, there were hundreds more who gazed at her with desolate eyes," the book read.

One after the other, the book described chaotic Manila: "six-hour traffic jams, suffocating pollution, horrifying sex trade."

The book described the sex industry as consisting mostly of young children "many of whom had been sold to pimps by parents who took solace in knowing that at least their children would be fed."

"All around her, she could see humanity overrun by its primal instinct for survival…When they face desperation…human beings become animals," the book read.

The book went on to detail a turning point in Brooks' life. "I've run through the gates of hell," she said.

Traumatized, Brooks "left the Philippines at once, without even saying goodbye to the other members of the group."

This is not the first time that the Philippines' so-called ugly side was described in novels and movies.

Hollywood actress Claire Danes got a lot of bad press when she shot her 1999 movie "Brokedown Palace" in the Philippines which settings is in the garbage area. She described Manila as smelling "of cockroaches. There's no sewage system in Manila, and people have nothing there. People with, like, no arms, no legs, no eyes, no teeth."

She was later declared persona non grata.

Last year, actor Taylor Kitsch created a controversy when he described his "airport nightmare" supposedly in the Philippines to TV talk show host David Letterman, claiming an immigration officer even tried to take his iPhone. It turned out that Kitsch was actually talking about Indonesia but did not bother to correct his statement despite the social media backlash.

Tourism officials have been trying to bring to boost the image of the Philippines with its catchy phrase, "More Fun in the Philippines." The Department of Tourism reported an increase in tourist arrivals last year.

The Philippines also had its fair share of praise from Hollywood when stars Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz spoke about their experiences shooting "The Bourne Legacy" in the country last year.

Just last week, Vin Diesel was seen roaming around town in a jeepney.

The impact of Dan Brown's "Inferno" remains to be seen. While a work of fiction, Brown again provides an introduction that confuses the ordinary reader about what's true and what's not -- just like in his popular novel "The Da Vinci Code."

"Inferno" is his take on Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy."

MMDA to Dan Brown: Manila is portal to heaven not gates of hell

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino's letter to novelist Dan Brown. Ian Cruz

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday wrote a letter to American best-selling novelist Dan Brown expressing "disappointment" over his "inaccurate" depiction of Manila in his latest novel Inferno.

"While we are aware that yours is a work of fiction, we are greatly disappointed by your inaccurate portrayal of our beloved metropolis," MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said in a letter.

"We are displeased of how you have used Manila as a venue and source of character's breakdown and trauma, much more her disillusionment in humanity," read the letter dated May 23.

Tolentino told GMA News that rather than the "gates of hell" that Brown called Manila, the metropolis is more of a "portal to heaven" because of the residents' religiosity.

"More than your portrayal of it, Metro Manila is the center of Filipino spirit, faith and hope… Manila citizens are more than capable of exemplifying good character and compassion towards each other, something your novel has failed to acknowledge," Tolentino stressed.

"Truly, our place is an entry to heaven," he added, reversing Brown's depiction of Manila as "gates of hell."

"We hope that this letter enlightens you and may it guide you the next time you cite Manila in any of your works," the MMDA chairman noted.,

    Dan brown is too insensitive!!

He could not see, the PHL government did their best to help the country, spending Millions for the DOT "Its more fun in the Philippines" and only a gay like him will reverse the effort of the Government?

Its our money.. its our tax used to promote the Beautiful islands of Boracay, El Nido, Bohol Etc..

The truth is Dan Brown is a Gay I knew that and its his rights to be gay but he must not destroy the Philippines through his fictional novel....

To tell you many people believes fiction and reflect it into reality... he is just so damn heartless.. the Effort of our government spending the advertisement that Philippines is beautiful to see... you could see the beaches but Dan Brown make it terrible...

    I hate him....

I would stop reading his book!! I will burn his book so my family would not able to see them... He is a bad Gay unlike other gays around...

Gays are entertaining but Dan Brown is un upset gay without life

  2. I came from the Southern Philippines; I was born in the jungle where the worlds’ largest Crocodile “lolong” captured (Agusan) and moved to the west of the island and grown up in the peaceful farm of my papa in Tapalan, Salug, Zamboanga del Norte which place I called a paradise.

When I wake up early in the morning the sun will peep over the hills while the birds are singing around me..(We have the tokmo bird, tamsi, pirok-pirok, woozing silent flying manatad, maya in their flying team and the singing Tikarol with its sound.. kick.kcik.kcik.kick…kcik!!) The bees are also humming around sipping the wild flowers’ sweetness and the morning dew as I walk in the grassy amorsiko field.. it touches my naked innocent body… and I would run from the top of the hills down to the brook to play the shadow of the small trees as the sun rays tries to see my naked body young boy living in the paradise which no one cares if I need to live like Adam in the Paradise of Eden without any covering in my body. Or I would be like Dan Brown crown with fame and thorny green leaves in his mouth. My Island is in Mindanao but opposite from it was known, I never even heard any sounds of a Gun..

I visited Manila, I stayed there for 6 months and sometimes I could say that this place is hot as hell during summer but I would disagree that Manila would be called as “the Gateway to Hell” but a “A Gateway of Heaven as you entered the Philippines, “when you pass by this thorny Manila.. You could find the World’s most beautiful and hidden paradise “the El Nido Palawan”

The fact is I am so disappointed to you Dan Brown! Dude! I lost respect of your fame and to your over exaggeration and unfriendly words. Yes, your books could be helpful enough to Manila so they would changed as poverty, flesh trade, corruption, pollution exist in that Metropolis but Dan Brown have you ever tried to see your kitchen if you don’t have any garbage? Have you ever tried to see any other place? Or have you even visited the Philippines to make you a conclusion?

Dan Brown I mistaken of my choice to pick you as one of my most favored Writer as I found out that you are a Liar and not a good model to the readers. Well sorry for my words and for my English. My native Language is Subanen and Binisaya. I only tried to use English in School and I could not express to the deepest feeling how I feel and how disappointed to you.

The Fact is … I discovered that if the Politics are dirty as it is called ‘Dirty Politics” .. now Dan Brown is even more Dirty as He needs to write a Book that would upset the people so he would become a topic and he would become “famous” because people of more than 100 Million victims would scroll their mouse and search him in the Internet that would make him Viral and he would become “MONEY” for spreading Lies. Now you could not imagine how dirty are your thought Dan brown? You are even more dirtier than the garbage in Manila and the rotting garbage in your Kitchen.. (Funny)

The Lost Symbol which was written by you is one of my most favorite books; I read it twice cover to cover. Though you are so good in imagining about Alpha male men who seems like a long dream of yours to be a woman dating with muscled and good looking men, still the lost symbol’s story is completed with mysterious symbols. A mystery of your existence that could not come out that men’s body is your paradise. Then so what huh! It’s your choice Dan Brown but…

It’s not a Choice to write a book about the places where you never visited in your entire life. Because it would make you A BIG LIAR..

Your writing IS ALSO A “FOUND SYMBOL” OF WHO YOU ARE”.

Calm down guys it's just a fiction...brown's novel only portrays what he saw in his mind. It is just right to be awakened by it's content (as there is some truth in it) & let us improve further economically and clean our ranks with people w/o vision for country-wide development narrowing the gap of poor & rich. May be at that time nobody will dare to label our beloved city as "gate to hell" instead it shall be called "gateless paradise".

    Gate of hell daw oh.

mali kasi ang pagkasabi nya.. dapat hell nalang "Manila is a hell" mas acceptable yon... keysa sabihin nya gateway of hell...

sa loob ng Pilipinas makikita mo ang Heaven, ang paradise so maling mali ang title nya talaga and its really a misleading .. yeah fiction but its kinda bad for the country baka isipin ng iba na impyerno pala ang pilipinas..

manila could be hell but not a gateway because inside the Philippines, the hidden paradise, the heavens are there

It is fiction so what is the fuss? Anyway, the reality is Metro Manila's air pollution of buses, jeepneys, tricycles and trucks will make you cough and be sickly. Noise pollution of buses, jeepneys, tricycles, trucks is really horrible.

Many of MMDA traffic enforcers are tolerant of traffic violators - majority of bus drivers do not stop on the appropriate.bus stops especially if they see traffic enforcers are not around. Bus stops along EDSA highway is up to Ayala Avenue only - why so incomplete?

Pathways and bikelanes have a very limited space - they love to start a project here and do not sustain them. Slums are everywhere especially at the airport areas. Government is not doing anything at all - they love to talk and not do anything to better the lives of these poor people.

Just observe those who smoke, they throw cigarette butts, food and candy wrappers along the streets. They do not have discipline at all and authorities are not doing anything.

This is the reality in Metro Manila!

Most parts of Metro Manila is in chaos. Look at electrical wirings, they entangle and old electric posts are not removed. Creeks, canals and rivers are so dirty, people urinate and shit there without any concern to their environment at all. Authorities are used to these things. They do something for 1 to 2 months in a year and the rest of the year they allow these old ways to flourish. It is waste of money and effort - no concrete solution to stop this problem once and for all.

Imagine during New Year, it is only in our country where close to an average of 800 to 1,000 people get hurt every year because firecrackers are indiscriminately being thrown on the streets of Metro Manila instead of designated locations. This is hell!

Most of the Tycoons, businessmen and highly educate people frustrate the plans of the poor, unemployed, aged, oppressed, sick, PWDs. The rich become richer and richer while the poor become poorer and poorer - it is all because of the greed of those have a lot at the expense of millions of Filipinos. Contractualization of employment is everywhere.

Electricity cost is the 2nd highest in Asia. The government is in cahoots of private sectors both are not doing anything at all to reduce the high power costs.

Sex industry is flourishing in Metro Manila - because of poverty, male and female sex prostitutes are rampant. Just check on male and female spa - extra service means sexual service.

Think of this People...!!! When you write a FICTION novel or Story YOU must change the name of People and Place not to intend to hurt those people BECAUSE USING A REAL NAME AND PLACE IN A FICTION STORY OR NOVEL IS AGAINST THE LAW OF THE PHILIPPINES.

TO MAKE IT CLEAR.. DAN BROWN NOW IS A CRIMINAL.. HE VIOLATED THE LAW OF THE COUNTRY FOR USING THE NAME MANILA. ITS CLEARLY AGAINST THE LAW OF THE COUNTRY.

FOR MANILA, WAKE UP!! file a case against him.. He must face the Court in the Philippines and the Court must order him to ban writing any books because HE is spreading lies.. HOAX..

IT IS CLEAR ALSO WE UNDERSTAND ABOUT FICTION... BUT BY USING A REAL NAME OF PLACE TO CREATE DESTRUCTION.. IS A VIOLATION OF LAW...

I AM CALLING DOT AND MMDA TO FILE A CASE AGAINST HIM AND SITE THE LAW HE VIOLATED.

I AM CALLING ALSO THE UNITED BOOK STORE AND THE NATIONAL BOOK STORE AND ALL BOOK STORE IN THE PHILIPPINES TO BAN HIS BOOK AS HE IS SPREADING LIES

    Okay simple facts,
6hrs traffic jams, really im almost 30yrs old based in Manila and i never experienced 6hrs traffic jams my whole life, may pag-kaexag naman ata un.

why are you so bad Philippines?

why are you so bad philippines?
